Liverpool based act Karl McCann released his latest album KXI earlier this September. It doesn't disappoint, providing a mellow, introspective, lofi acoustic journey. The guitar work is a highlight here, delivering somber, reflective riffs and interesting chords. They manage to be engaging while simultaneously providing a great background atmosphere and mood. Layered on top are low, shoegazey vocals that help create a really relaxing soundscape. What I really like about this album is that because of the talented guitar playing and song writing, it never feels stale or repetitive. Whether it be an instrument drawing you in or a fun vocal hook or chorus, each song feels unique while still maintaining the overall vibe of the album. Sad, wistful, introspective. You can get lost in the music and your thoughts, and I think that's a sign of good writing. I would say the only negative to this album is the production. There are moments where it feels like the mic is almost clipping/buzzing. In my opinion it works with the whole lofi feel of the album and doesn't detract from the listening experience.
I'd recommend this album to anyone who likes mellow, lofi acoustic music. It's a solid album and won't disappoint you.
Top Three Tracks
Looking For Clues
This song is one of the best examples of McCann's guitar playing and how it compliments his singing. It pulls you in and then provides an emotional backdrop for his almost trance-like singing. This song fills you with a sense of sanctuary, wonder, confusion, and of carrying on. I think due to the very relaxed vibe you can connect and attach your own feelings to it, which may be totally different from mine. McCann creates a canvas and lets you dwell in it and make your own meaning, which I think is not only a strength of this song but of the album as a whole.
Are We Preserving Ourselves
One of the slower tracks on this album, but another great tune carried by a melodic guitar track that's able to blend with McCann's vocals. I think this song is also really enhanced by the percussion. It provides a snappy, electronic sound and helps in creating a pretty unique mix and sound.
This Vow Will Surprise You Somehow
One of the more 'traditional' songs but still one of my favourites. I mean traditional in the sense that it utilizes chords and more melodic singing than some of the other tracks. It's a light, relaxed song with an air of hopeful sadness around it. The chorus is quite catchy as well.
