Knocked Loose - A Different Shade Of Blue ALBUM REVIEW

Knocked Loose dropped their much awaited second LP last month and it's even heavier than their first. They bring back their signature sound from Laugh Tracks and throw in a few new sounds. I particularly like the incorporation of their guitarist's vocals and the more complex, death metal style riffing they do in songs like Forget Your Name and By The Grave. I think that's where the love ends for me though. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike this album. I don't think I'm particularly fond of it either though. Maybe I hyped it up too much in my head and that's why I'm disappointed. It just doesn't pull me in or make me want to listen to it back to back, over and over. There are individual songs I'm happy to put on, but as a whole it doesn't do it for me. While heavy riffs are awesome, A Different Shade Of Blue can feel very repetitive at times. I think the songwriting was actually a negative for me. Oftentimes it felt like it would roughly transition from one simple heavy riff to another. Simple doesn't mean bad, but I kept finding myself waiting for the next section because it just wasn't engaging enough. I think if this album was shortened to an EP length and a lot of the filler was taken out, this would be banging - there are great moments on this LP. I like the vibe they are going for and I'm definitely going to still follow these guys and see them when they come near me. I have no doubt this new stuff will crush live as well - there are breakdowns aplenty.

If you like heavy, beatdown styled hardcore I think you'll find something to love on this album. It's definitely worth a listen, and while I don't think it's genre defining or breaking new ground, it's a decent hardcore album from a band that has a lot of potential.

Top Three Tracks

Forget Your Name

I love the brutal, death metal inspired sections on this song. Right from the intro this song is a banger and definitely my favourite on the album. The guest vocals by Every Time I Die's Keith Buckley are the highlight here. The direction they went with this song is something I'd like to see Knocked Loose continue exploring in the future.

By The Grave

This is another song that subverts what you would normally expect from Knocked Loose. A slower introduction transitions into a fun riff that's really hard to not headbang to.

Misguided Son

I like the atmosphere they create in the beginning of this song, and the utilization of their guitarist's vocals here are stellar. He sounds tempting, fatherly, and demonic and the same time - if Satan was the vocalist of Knocked Loose this is what I imagine he would sound like. The way they go back and forth between him and the main vocalist sets a really cool tone. This song also incorporates the best parts of their 'regular' sound. Heavy breakdowns, screams, and slow crunching riffs that get you amped up and ready to throw the fuck down.

Mgla - Age of Excuse ALBUM REVIEW

Polish black metal band Mgla dropped their newest release Age of Excuse  last month. It crushes, combining savage vocals and biting cold riffs with melodic songwriting and speed. Their drummer, Darkside, is an absolute machine. He does a lot of work on the kit to spice up the rhythm section, utilizing a lot of splash and china cymbals alongside consistent blasts and aggressive sounding kick drums. The end result is an amazing backbone for the rest of the band to play over, helping this album go from solid to fantastic. The album art is also haunting. Similar to their previous releases, it's highly detailed monochrome cover that gives you a sense of dread. I love it.  Checks this out if you're at all into black metal. In my opinion this is one of the best black metal albums to come out in 2019 - you don't want to miss this one. Top Three Songs Age of Excuse I I love the atmosphere this song puts out right from the beginning. It sounds like a skeleton j...

Ace A CAped CrusAder - The Anthology ALBUM REVIEW

Brooklyn based hip hop artist Ace A CAped CrusAder put out his latest release The Anthology  late last month. Clocking in at only 22 minutes, the album is fairly short but it has no lack of substance. It delivers emotional and sobering verses over very smooth, relaxed keyboard and synths. Ace has an easy, laid back yet sorrowful sounding cadence and flow most of the time but he is able to turn it up on songs like The Switch Up  and 100 Jesus Pieces. The Switch Up is a more dynamic song that probably showcases Ace A's rhythm the best. It's also got some pretty cool instrumentation - towards the end of the song it sounds like there is some kind of Gamelan influenced percussion going on. Maybe not what he intended, but I thought it was cool nonetheless. The songs are short, averaging around two minutes with the longest one clocking in at 2:48. I don't think this is a bad thing though - they are able to deliver their message without getting bogged down in repetitive filler....

Static Choke - Spicy EP REVIEW

Illinois based punk band Static Choke released a three song EP earlier this year, Spicy. A DIY album, everything was done by the band — recording, instruments, mixing, mastering, and even the album art. It's a short listen, with the whole EP clocking in at under five minutes but it's a fun ride. Shrieking harsh vocals, fast and simple punk riffs, and some pretty nifty drumming define this EP. The audio quality is pretty solid considering it was DIY. I do wish the guitar tone was a little beefier, and sometimes the vocals feel like they can get lost in the same frequency as the guitars. The band also has some electronic segments which I think compliment the songs and don't wear out their welcome. As I mentioned before, the drummer is talented and is probably the highlight of the EP. He delivers some pretty interesting drum lines and a ton of fills. The song structure and riffs can be a little straightforward and the drumming really spices it up.  I think I would have...
