Raymond Revel - Sunrise SINGLE REVIEW

California based singer, songwriter, and producer Raymond Revel released the single Sunrise back in 2018, but it has been gaining a lot of momentum recently. It was featured on Spotify's Discover Weekly, and has over 25,000 plays in the past three weeks alone. It's not tough to see why - it's a simple, fun pop song with a catchy rhythm. It's pretty stripped down, featuring Raymond's vocals, a piano, bass, some percussion, and a fun xylophone sounding instrument for the majority of the song. This was written, recorded, produced, and mastered by Raymond himself and it sounds great. Everything is clear and full sounding, especially the piano. It has a very warm sounding tone. Raymond's unique voice compliments this - he sounds really youthful and cheerful, helping create the positive, carefree feeling Sunrise puts out.

The lyrics are fairly average, discussing how he can't wait to see his crush/significant other and wants the next day to come - hence the title, Sunrise. The verses are generic but not bad. I do feel like the chorus, "I wanna see that sunrise over my head" is repeated a bit too much. I think he could have done a little more with the lyric writing to make the song more engaging. I have this feeling with the composition in general as well. The core rhythm is really catchy but it doesn't really develop anywhere. The song remains very similar throughout the 3:10 run time and doesn't have much dynamics or change. With that being said it's still a fun listen and you can't help but feel good when you hear it. The xylophone melody is probably my favourite part - it's just so gosh darn happy sounding. It's very difficult not to bob your head to it.

I really like the art for this track. Like the song, it's fairly simple but it does the trick of making you feel positive and warm. I'm also a sucker for warm colour gradients and plants. The cover scratches both of those itches excellently.

Sunrise isn't breaking any new ground but it's a fun track to throw on and put out good vibes. Check it out if you're in the mood for a positive, youthful pop song that's easy to listen to. Raymond shows a lot of talent and promise here. Keep him on your radar if you like what you hear, I think he has a bright future ahead of him. Eric Terino - Champagne and Childhood Hunger ALBUM REVIEW

Eric Terino's Champagne and Childhood Hunger is a passionate and intriguing journey into the despondent, lonely, and dark corners of Eric's mind. Released earlier this Autumn, Champagne and Childhood Hunger  is primarily a piano, vocal, and synth album. It's beautifully written, and the stripped down aesthetic helps you focus on the stories Eric is singing — and boy can he sing. He reminds me of a classic rock vocalist in his tone. With his choice of vocal melodies and inflections, he also provides a sort of whimsical, eclectic feeling to his singing. The piano work is solid, and combined with some well utilized synths create a great background for Eric to deliver his stories through. The lyrics are deep, heartfelt, and speak to emotions many of us can relate to — primarily loneliness and loss. He's not afraid to cut deep or mince words, yet even when he's being blunt he manages to keep it sounding poetic. Take this line from Annus Horribilis: " This shit h...

Mgla - Age of Excuse ALBUM REVIEW

Polish black metal band Mgla dropped their newest release Age of Excuse  last month. It crushes, combining savage vocals and biting cold riffs with melodic songwriting and speed. Their drummer, Darkside, is an absolute machine. He does a lot of work on the kit to spice up the rhythm section, utilizing a lot of splash and china cymbals alongside consistent blasts and aggressive sounding kick drums. The end result is an amazing backbone for the rest of the band to play over, helping this album go from solid to fantastic. The album art is also haunting. Similar to their previous releases, it's highly detailed monochrome cover that gives you a sense of dread. I love it.  Checks this out if you're at all into black metal. In my opinion this is one of the best black metal albums to come out in 2019 - you don't want to miss this one. Top Three Songs Age of Excuse I I love the atmosphere this song puts out right from the beginning. It sounds like a skeleton j...
